Protect Your Yard from Flooding this Hurricane Season
Every fall in Texas, hurricane season begins and brings with it the uncertainty of the future. It’s also the perfect time to take a few simple steps that can reduce the chances of flooding on your property.
Look for potential problems around your yard.
While late summer and early fall is a great time to walk your property looking for potential flood issues, it’s never the wrong time to improve your odds against flooding. Take a walk around your yard and complete these relatively easy steps that can reduce flooding:
- Look for areas where water should be able to flow freely such as drainage areas, ditches, trenches, house and street gutters.
- Clear out any debris like sand/mud, sticks and twigs, leaves, mulch, or other yard waste that can reduce water flow.
- Pay attention to areas that remain damp after heavy rain or tend to collect water and consider adding additional drainage to reduce erosion and keep your yard from ponding.
Check your trees.
Dead and loose tree branches can become a hazard during storms with high winds and heavy rains. Not only are they a hazard for people, homes, and property when they fall, but they can also obstruct water flow or change the water flow during heavy rains. Branches can create a barrier in drainage areas, clog gutters and ditches, and redirect water in unanticipated ways which can cause unforeseen damage. By removing dead and loose branches, you prevent potential hazards and property issues in the future.
It’s time for sprinkler system maintenance.
Sprinkler systems are a fantastic way to ease the burden of lawn care, and they require little maintenance to keep them going for years. A well-maintained sprinkler system helps avoid underground leaks, ensures the backflow prevention device is working correctly, and has sprinkler heads that are clear of debris which may cause malfunctions and pressure buildups in the underground lines. A well-functioning sprinkler system reduces the potential for lawn flooding due to sprinkler system breakdown.
